In the context, as a developing nation, India has an opportunity to share the experience of the advanced nations and thereby, through juxtaposition, can adopt appropriate policies for strengthening the existing system of engineering education, best suits for national situations. Perception about the profession and problem context of engineering education needs ramification. Shortcomings in engineering practice need to be identified in the areas of innovation, research and development, design and technical improvisation. System related and profession oriented issues need to be addressed through the global experiences. Both the Dakar Education for All’s 5th goal and the Millennium Development goal emphasise goal that are distinguished as gender parity goal [achieving equal participation of girls and boys in all forms of education based on their proportion in the relevant age-groups in the population] and gender equality goal [ensuring educational equality between boys and girls]. In turn these have been characterised as quantitative/numerical and qualitative goal respectively. There is thus need to understand the reports of UNGEI, EFA’S global monitoring report and MDG framework so that the meaning of the term gender parity and gender equality with reference to education can be connoted, linkages between them can be explored, and the best mechanisms to measure progress towards these goal can be identified and also take a stock of the progress made with respect to some of these questions in various countries and sub-regions especially in reference to the fifth goal of EFA Act (Education For All’s act). The paper concludes with need recognizing that bringing all girl children to school is not merely an educational action but requires transformation of attitudes and behavioural dynamics of society, so that gender equality is seen as a value in itself worth pursuing.Item A Study of the Correlates of Organizational Commitment Among Secondary School Teachers(Chitkara University Publications, 2013-03-25) Madhu Gupta; Manju GehlawatThe study was planned to determine the effect of job satisfaction, work motivation and type of schools on organizational commitment of secondary school teachers. It is in the classroom that learners can analyse and evaluate their experiences, learn to doubt, to question, to investigate and to think independently. The aim of education simultaneously reflects the current needs and aspirations of a society as well as its lasting values and human ideals. As aspiration and expectations of each generation vary with time, constant review of curriculum and evaluation system becomes an essential exercise. In the recent years, the problem of under-employment or rather unemployment among technical and professional engineering graduates & diploma pass outs is a cause of serious concern. Substandard Institutes are producing mere graduates & diploma holders instead of technically sound and competent professionals as intended. These pass outs are either under- employed or if employed, they do not fulfill or meet out the expectations of Industries or organizations. There is immediate need to take few corrective measures by the academic coordinators, policy makers and management of the institutes associated in providing technical manpower to the industries system; otherwise India will face an explosion of unemployed technical graduates/diploma holders. The world of academia will have to understand the nerve of Industries/organizations and require producing true professionals instead of mere graduates/diploma holders. The per capita income has been decreasing rapidly and the poor are becoming poorer. Even the literates are not able to generate income as per the needs and suffering from underemployment or unemployment. There is a huge skill shortage seen in the qualified graduates as per the industry standards. The main challenge in front of governments is how to enhance the economic empowerment in the society. The economic empowerment of these excluded literate youths in the country can play a major role in boosting the economy at a local level. There is a need for an entrepreneurial environment which can facilitate entrepreneurs to start their own ventures and develop micro economy. Skill based special trainings and awareness about entrepreneurship among students can be the solution. Information dissemination, financial access, mentoring and business incubation facilities in the education institutions could be few of the steps in this regard. Problem solving approach which is core of teaching and learning of Mathematics, depends upon trial and error theory. The errors committed by students cannot be eliminated but reduced to certain extent by studying their causes. Teaching is a process in which a teacher follows various steps out of which two major steps are to discover the errors of students and to provide the remedy for the errors. An attempt was made in the present investigation to study the causes in case of a subject which showed minimum reduction of errors. It was found that the conceptual errors in case of the subject were not reduced.Item An Analysis of Select Models of Rural Education in Developing Nations and Their Possible Applicability in India(Chitkara University Publications, 2013-11-24) Shweta SinghThis study conceptually analyses select rural education models which have been implemented successfully in various developing countries. Krishnan; T.K. Rasheeja‘Empowering women’ has become a buzzword in our socioeconomic parlor. Several initiatives in line with empowering and emboldening women have been on the roll. Provision of education in general and higher education in particular has been seen as a potent tool in mainstreaming women everywhere. India is not an exception in this regard. Among the Indian States, Kerala has exhibited a unique model based on education and health. Despite the bold attempt of the State in mainstreaming women through Democratic Decentralisation and provision of higher education, the fact remains that women in Kerala are not proportionately represented in the decision making bodies of Universities like Senate, Syndicate, Academic Councils, Board of Studies and so on. As regards women representation in responsible positions like Registrars, Pro-Vice Chancellors, Vice Chancellors, Faculty Deans etc., their presence is conspicuous by their absence. For example, out of the 12 Universities in Kerala, we have only one women Vice-Chancellor and a ProVice Chancellor. This is the case with other dignified positions in the field of higher education. The paper underlines the need for enhanced women participation in decision making bodies of higher education like Universities for their empowerment.Item Education: An Instrument to Enhance Women Empowerment and Inclusive Growth(Chitkara University Publications, 2014-03-03) Bhavesh JhaEducation provides a basis for a positive change and transformation of the society. Education empowers women to understand the economics of managing resources and grab the opportunities for value generation in a micro (household) and macro (societal) level. The topic exhibits about the necessity of women education and benefits thereto in the process of competitiveness of a society and a nation at large. Researchers say that educating a woman means educating a family. More empowered the women are; more empowered would be the society. Educated women have multiple advantages (tangible and intangible) as far as families’ and social needs are concerned. They play various roles as a responsible citizens, housewives, mothers etc. and also as contributors to families’ income. Women accounts for half of the human resource. Despite various awareness programmes, regulations worldwide on gender equality and women empowerment, the situation is not good. According to United Nations Development Programme, two thirds of global illiterate population is women. 7 out of 10 women are reported experienced physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, says UN Women. Women earn only 10 % of all the income, only 1% of the property and yet produce half of the world’s food. Irrespective of class, culture or income, women are discriminated all over. The situation in developing and undeveloped countries is worse. According to a global poll by Thomson Reuters, India is said to be the 4th most dangerous country in the world. India needs to do a lot as far as security, freedom, economic empowerment etc. are concerned. Education can play a crucial role in enhancing their social status and empower them to stand against the discrimination. This is a tool to encourage them to attain self reliance and gives them power to fight against the evils.Item Development of Critical Thinking Skill Programme for the Student Teachers of Diploma in Teacher Education colleges(Chitkara University Publications, 2014-03-03) A.
