Abstract: These days, computers have an immense impact on everyone and we perform nearly all the essential works of our life electronically. Keeping in mind the high usage of computers, there is a requirement to have proficient, simple and speedy methods for transfer of data between computer and human beings. Document Analysis and Recognition (DAR) systems play a main job in transferring the data among computers and humans. Character recognition system is a necessary part in analysis of DAR system [1]. Character Recognition systems have been developed to recognize printed and handwritten texts. The systems for recognizing handwritten text basically provide an interface for the improvement of communication among the users and computers. In this article, a detailed literature review related to the recognition of characters and words written in various Indian and non Indian scripts like Arabic, Chinese, French, Thai, Japanese, English, Devanagari, Marathi, Kannada, Gurmukhi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telgu and Bangla Gujarati, has been presented. Here we have reviewed various segmentation, classification and feature extraction techniques in order to recognize various Indian and non Indian scripts mentioned above. Also the recognition accuracy achieved by various researchers using these techniques has also been presented in this article.
